IMPORTANT Closing Information

Much of this is encapsulated in the Closing email you received from the Office of Residence Life but here’s a few important things to remember:

1. 24 hour quiet hours began 9 PM Tuesday, May 4. If you are loud, you can be documented without any warning. Please be considerate of those around you.

2. You must leave 24 hours after your last final UNLESS you are graduating or you have filled out a request to stay late AND are approved. The deadline has passed for approval and at this point only truly good reasons will be honored.

Before you leave: Make sure to get EVERYTHING out of your room and if you don’t want something nice, please donate it to Ten Tons of Love in the lobby. Please leave your room in good condition; failure to do so may result in fines.

Checkout Process

- For Haven and Walnut: When it is time for you to leave, you can either do normal checkout or express checkout. You will receive an envelope in your mailbox so when you decide to leave, MAKE SURE TO put your key in the envelope and your SUID dot on the envelope front. Then either put it in your mailbox (AND LOCK IT) or talk to the person at the Main Desk.

- For Washington Arms: You will receive an envelope in your mailbox; when you’re room is completely clean and you are ready to check out, MAKE SURE TO put your key in the envelope and your SUID dot on the envelope front.
THEN, BASED ON THE TIME DO THE FOLLOWING:
Between 8 AM – 1159 AM: Go to the Haven Main Desk to drop off your envelope (w/ key and dot)
Between 12 – 8 PM: Go to the Wash Arms Main Desk to drop off your envelope (with key and dot)
Between 8 PM – 12 AM: Go to the Haven Main Desk to drop off your envelope (w/ key and dot)
FOR EMERGENCIES OR PRE-ARRANGED CHECK OUTS:
Between 12 AM – 759 AM: Call the RA on-call and an RA will meet you at the Wash Arms Main Desk, where they will check you out.

This is a notice to inform you that there will be RSAs (the people with the red shirts who check your ID in the evening) during the time period prior and following Mayfest on Friday, April 30th. Their presence is simply a precaution to ensure the sanctity of your home during this festive time.

Thus, take extra care to make sure to have your SUID with you on April 30 as you will need it to get past the RSA (just like in the evening).

In continuation of our Goon Squad tradition, the Office of First-Year and Transfer Programs is seeking volunteers to welcome new students and families at residence halls and help with evening events. Over 3,200 students are expected to arrive in August and your volunteer efforts will ensure they begin their SU experience on the right foot.

If you are interested in volunteering this year, please visit GOON SQUAD 2010 for the on-line volunteer registration form. Volunteers must be registered by JUNE 1.

Open Windows = Slamming Doors

Some have expressed concern for the seemingly sharp increase as of late of slamming doors. This is most likely due to people keeping their windows open and the differences in air pressure causing the doors to slam.

SO, please be conscious of this and close your door slowly. Just because the wind may make your door slam doesn't mean you should let it.

It’s a trip to New York City that is organized by the Health and Exercise Science Departments Majors’ Club to visit “Bodies: The Exhibition” on Saturday, April 17.

Itinerary for trip to New York City:

- Bus departs SU (College Place) at 6:30am and arrives at Bodies Exhibit (NYC) at 11:15 AM for check in
- Exhibit Tour starts at 12pm— free lunch to follow
- Free time in the city: 3:30pm – 6:30pm
- Bus departs NYC at 6:30pm to arrive at SU campus between 11-11:30pm.

How to become an attractive job candidate

The SU Student Association will hold an open forum on positioning yourself for jobs in the 21st century.

Representatives from SU Career Services will be there to answer questions, give advice and show students how to become attractive job candidates.

The forum will be held Thursday,
April 15, at 6 p.m. in Watson Theatre.

Come to hear answers to these questions:

- Forbes magazine came out with an article "Worst Jobs of the 21st Century" which included news reporters, economists, radio announcers, travel agents and even federal employees. What if I want to go into these careers? What can I do to set myself apart? What is a journalist to do about this? Is the media industry dying?

- Should I just work an average summer job at a drive-thru to earn money and not shoot for an internship?

- How can I establish a Web presence? Aren't employers looking at more than the resume and cover letter now?

- What are the most important things to include on a resume? Should it be education (SU is a good school, right?) or should it be experiences?

- What if my resume is thin on experiences? What should I do?

- I still don't know exactly what career I want. Where should I apply for a summer job/ internship?

- What are the fastest growing or most stable industries in the next 5 to 10 years?

- What will make an ideal candidate for jobs in the future?

- I heard the average person changes jobs at least five times in their first five years of work. How can I find a stable job that pays well out of college?

- I'm thinking about grad school, but I also have an eye on cost. Should I take on more debt to go to grad school or pay off my debt with a job right out of undergrad? Don't most people who go into the workplace not go back to school?

Registration forms are available at Haven and Washington Arms Main Desks as well as the Goldstein Student Center, the Office of Residence Life and at the E.S. Bird Library.

The first 120 undergraduate students (60 teams) can participate. There is a $5 registration fee per student ($10 per team). Submit registrations forms and fees by 5:00 pm on February 19, 2010 at the Office of Residence Life at 111 Waverly Ave., Suite 200 (above the Health Center).

Undergraduate students will have the opportunity to explore Bird Library after hours and compete against each other in teams of two by searching the library for answers to challenging questions. Free food will be available for all participants. First prize is a $400 gift card to the SU Bookstore, second prize is $200 and third place is $100. Other prizes include gift cards for Carousel Mall, Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, and more.

Free Airport Shuttles!

As per SU News, the Student Association will be providing a free shuttle bus from the Regional Transport Center (RTC) and Hancock Airport for students returning to campus on Sunday, Jan. 17 and Monday, Jan 18.

The times of operations are as follows:
Jan. 17: 2-11 p.m.
Jan. 18: 10 a.m.-11 p.m.

This is a single bus that will be arriving at the RTC 15 minutes after the hour and Hancock airport 30 minutes after the hour and arriving at Schine Student Center on the hour. The last bus to depart from Schine Student Center is 10 p.m. on both dates. The bus will be stopping in front of the RTC and in front of North Terminal of Hancock Airport.

Below are the important highlights from a more detailed email you should have received and read multiple times:

Residence Hall Closing
- H2W (as with all residence halls) will close for semester break promptly at 12 noon, Tuesday, December 22, 2009. This time reflects the absolute last moment you can be in the residence halls so please plan to be out by at least 11 AM to make it easier on yourself and us.

- All residents must leave within 24 hours of their last final exam or by 12 noon, Tuesday, December 22, whichever comes first.

- If you have extenuating circumstances requiring you to remain on-campus longer than 24 hours after your last final, you must complete a ‘Request to Stay Late’ form and return it to your residence hall’s main desk by 5 p.m., Wednesday, December 9.

To obtain a Request to Stay Late Form, you can:
-------- click here to generate an email message to request a form
-------- send an email to emnestor@syr.edu with the subject heading saying exactly “Stay Late Request.”
-------- pick up a form at your residence hall main desk between December 3 – 9, 2009 (there are a limited number of forms via this method).

Once you get the form, fill it out and hand it in at the Main Desk by 5 PM, Dec 9. If you do not complete a Request to Stay Late Form by the deadline, you will be asked to leave the residence hall 24 hours after your last final, or 12 noon, December 22, whichever comes first.

If you need to remain at a location past 12 Noon, Tuesday, December 22, you are welcome to stay at the Schine Student Center, Goldstein Student Center, or Marshall Square Mall. There is ample seating located in each of these areas where to may wait for a ride, bus, or taxi.

Quiet Hours
24-hour quiet hours will begin at 9 pm, Monday December 14, and will continue until the building closes.

Departure Information
Take all items that you will during the winter break as the residence halls will not re-open until 12 noon, Saturday, January 16, 2010.

Prior to your departure please be sure to complete the following items:
1. Donate unwanted items (clothing and unopened food) to the “Ten Tons of Love Winter” boxes your residence hall lobby December 11 - 22.
2. Unplug all electrical appliances, including refrigerators, computers, and televisions. Please empty, clean, and defrost your refrigerator. Be sure to keep the refrigerator door open.
3. Turn off all lights.
4. Remove all trash and recyclable items to the designated location on your floor. Blue recycling bins must be left in your room.
5. Close and lock all windows and security screens (where applicable). Curtains should be left open (except for residents on a ground floor, whom should close their curtains).
6. Remove all holiday decorations.
7. Lock your room door.

Thank you for your cooperation. Please note that after your departure, Office of Residence Life staff will be checking all rooms to ensure that these items were completed. The Office of Residence Life staff, as per the direction of the Safety Office, will unplug any appliances left plugged in outlets and will resolve any conditions that contribute to a safety violation(s).

The Spring RA selection process is open to all students (including first-years) and quickly approaching. The first step is to come out to one of the many information sessions held at residence halls around campus. Do you ever find yourself so steeped in work that your cranium is begging for a brief reprieve? Take a gander at some of the below websites for a short, hopefully well-deserved (if you're a constant procrastinator, stop reading now) break.

10. Collegehumor.com — The most mind-numbing website, collegehumor.com requires next to no intelligence to enjoy, so it acts as a perfect distraction from heavy studying.

9. Geekologie.com — Maybe you don’t really want to call yourself a geek, but you may still be kind of interested in what’s going on in the geek world. Geekologie is the website that will make you laugh aloud as you read about the ridiculousness of a robot trained to play Rock, Paper, Scissors or soap that is shaped like a Playstation controller.

8. Freerice.com — Ever feel that maybe all that time procrastinating should go to bettering the world? Maybe not, but even if you don’t care about the U.N. World Food Program, you can still support them in an easy way on freerice.com just by answering vocabulary questions. Put to use those hours you spent flipping through SAT vocabulary flash cards and earn some rice for people in need.

7. Pogo.com — For the casual game player looking for a seemingly quick break, pogo.com is perfect. Offering a wide range of games from Monopoly to NASCAR Web Racing, it will keep you occupied well beyond that short break you were looking for.

6. Bored.com — Sounds kind of trite, but actually bored.com will link you to a plethora of websites perfect to get you through those all-nighters. Bored.com will lead to the weirdest headlines, provide an outlet for you to send an e-mail to your future self (dear me, did you ever finish your paper?) and much, much more.

5. Postsecret.com — “I would love to drop an anvil on your girlfriend.” How can you not love a website where people send postcards in with their greatest confessions? The postcards tend to have an artistic side as well, making them both entertaining and visually appealing

4. Someecards.com — I think it’s safe to say this is the only website where you can send a card saying, “I promise not to laugh anymore at your ridiculous major.” The site has hundreds of cards filled with this similarly dry humor.

3. Perezhilton.com — Perez, not Paris, Hilton is a celebrity in his own right. He reports on celebrity gossip with rapid-fire posts, making it easy for his readers to stay up on the lives of celebrities, movies, new music, funny interviews and weird news. Without Perez, I personally wouldn’t have known about Chris Brown abusing Rihanna or Nadya Suleman’s 14 children. And that is the sort of knowledge we all need.

2. mylifeisaverage.com- you get to hear people's daily stories of how their life is just completely average, and it just makes your day that much better! Today, I realized the irony in handing out fliers that say "Save the Trees!" MLIA

1. Sporcle.com — Sometimes when I procrastinate, I think, “Wow, I really should be productive right now instead of doing whatever I’m doing.” That’s where sporcle.com comes in. Sporcle.com touts itself as a website of mentally stimulating diversions. They have quizzes on everything from naming every country in the world, to movie quote recognition. What did I learn from sporcle? That I am all knowing when it comes to Harry Potter

Alternative Spring Break

This year, twenty students will have the opportunity to attend a seven day trip to Washington DC (March 13-20, 2010) to take part in service work with the hungry and homeless population. Those on the trip will be participating in a four day volunteer camp with the Youth Services Opportunity Project. In addition to service work, there will also be opportunities to take in some of the sights of the DC Metro area.

The total cost of the trip is $200 with all meals and activities included.

The trip is open to all SU and ESF students living in on-campus housing. To be eligible for the Alternative Spring Break trip, students must attend one of the information sessions listed below and complete an application. The application is available online and is due via e-mail to Res Life Staff Member Jenni Greeno (jsgreeno@syr.edu) by Monday, December 14, 2009.

thoughts on community

Per one H2W-ite's thoughts on the subject of community:

"As a student I feel that getting involved in a community is extremely important. While you might not expect it to really matter, it does allow you to do a lot of things. Not only does it provide you with a great opportunity to fill your resume with character-building activities but it also gives a real depth to your college experience and make life-long friends.

As for how, there are many ways. One is to volunteer, which not only helps you grow but it also makes a difference in another's life. Just this past Friday I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club and played UNO and air hockey with some of the kids, which though small, has potential to make an impact.

Another way is to get involved in one of the over 300 student organizations and clubs on campus that allow you to get involved with academic, arts and entertainment, governance and more.

And last but not least, get involved in H2W, specifically our Community Council. This group of your fellow residents puts together fun events, fundraisers and is the collective voice of the three buildings.

Be a part of the SU community by getting involved!"

As this holiday weekend approaches, please be very wary of what you wear and where you go.

As far as what you decide to wear if you dress up, costumes, though fun, can land people in a lot of trouble. Specifically, costumes that employ black face (or a derivative of it) as well as costumes with weapons (even toy ones) can result in judicial action. Also remember to dress warmly for the cold (and possibly rainy) evening weather this weekend.

And before you head out to any social engagements, make sure you know where it is you're going and not to go it alone (travel in packs). Safety is paramount.

Overall, the key to a fun Halloween is a pinch of caution and a heap of sensibility (if you lack either, just ask your RA as they can help guide you to the right answer).

How to Make Good Coffee Legally

For many students, the sadness of not being able to bring a regular drip coffee pot into their residence hall room is almost too much to bear. Some would rather risk it then live without their coffee.

Fortunately there are plenty of ways to have your coffee without using an illegal appliance.

Here's two ways to make coffee using only a microwave and two simple coffee brewers:

1. French Press:
Simply go out and buy one from a local coffeehouse (Cafe Kubal on James St sells them frequently) or buy one online (Bodum makes great ones). The instructions simply involve heating the water for 4 minutes on HIGH in a microwave-safe container, combining it with ground coffee (make sure to freshly grind for best results) for at least 4 minutes, and shazam, you have great coffee.

Note that french press differs from regular drip, as the grinds have consistent contact with the grinds and hence, the coffee has natural oils that enhance the taste.

2. Pour Over Cone
It's basically taking the operation out of your typical coffee brewer. You simply purchase a cone (like the ones shown here) and some filters to fit it. The directions are as above in heating the water, add the desired ground coffee into the filtered cone (just buy a grinder if you don't have one), and then simply pour the heated water through the coffee into the a container/cup below it.

This is most similar to coffee pot coffee if you don't like the oils from the french press.

Thus my friends, there's many ways to have your coffee and not fear being found out for illegal action.
